Can you share a bit about yourself, including your background and personal journey?

I am Jennifer McCutcheon, the founder of Enable No More and Radiant Recovery Programs, and I work as a spiritual recovery and trauma healing coach. My mission is to help mothers impacted by their child’s addiction regain peace, break cycles, and reclaim control of their lives. Over the past two decades, my journey through addiction in my family has shaped me into a cycle-breaker, a truth-seeker, and a mother of two incredible children. The pain and trauma I’ve experienced from loving my family members with addiction led me to discover my purpose: empowering other mothers who are fighting similar battles.

I’ve hit rock bottom numerous times, trying to save my loved ones from addiction, but the pivotal moment came when I realized I was contributing to the chaos. I was as trapped in the cycles of addiction as my son, albeit in a different way. I learned that I had to be the one to change first, to heal and reclaim my life, and through my healing, I could set an example for my son’s recovery. This understanding birthed my mission to help others through Enable No More.

How has addiction impacted your life and the lives of your loved ones?

Addiction affected my family like a tsunami, wreaking havoc not just once, but three times. Both my first and second husbands struggled with addiction, and it became unbearable. But it was my son’s battle with mental health and addiction that truly broke me. I fought hard to save him, refusing to let addiction take him, but the brutal reality was that fighting addiction only led me to lose every time. My mental, emotional, and physical health deteriorated — I faced depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and even contemplated ending my life at one point. It was through these intense struggles that I found the strength to change the direction of my life.

What advice would you offer to mothers struggling with their own addiction or supporting a child through theirs?

To all mothers struggling with addiction — either your own or your child’s — know this: You have to go first. Your child’s addiction is not a mistake; it is an invitation for both of you to confront unhealed trauma and rediscover your worth. Addiction is a catalyst for transformation, shaking you to your core so that you can awaken to who you truly are. Recovery starts when you believe you are worthy of being saved. Your own healing will create a ripple effect that impacts your child’s recovery journey.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during your experience with addiction, and how did you overcome them?

One of my biggest challenges was accepting the role I played in perpetuating the cycle of addiction. I had to face the uncomfortable truth that I was enabling my son, offering temporary fixes to ease my own emotional pain. This was difficult to admit, but taking responsibility for my behavior was the first step toward breaking free. When I made amends with myself and embraced the need for change, my life transformed — and it had a profound impact on my son’s journey as well.

Where did you find the strength and resources to keep going during your toughest moments?

During my darkest moments, my strength came from the support of family, friends, and my deep belief that there was a way forward, even when my son was on life support. I leaned heavily on ancient healing practices like breathwork and meditation, which healed my body and mind. I also sought out communities that empowered me and helped break the cycle. Therapy, counseling, and medication played crucial roles in my recovery, but my true healing began when I embraced spiritual trauma healing and worked with somatic energy practitioners.

What message would you like to share with mothers who feel isolated or hopeless in their battle against addiction?

If you’re feeling isolated or hopeless in your battle against addiction, remember that letting go is not giving up. It’s about releasing the illusion of control you think you have over your child’s journey. Letting go doesn’t mean you stop loving them — it means you trust that they are capable and resilient enough to handle life’s challenges.

It’s vital to focus on your own healing and recovery first. By doing so, you create the space for your child to embark on their own journey of self-discovery. Healing is about reclaiming your power, letting go of control, and trusting in the natural unfolding of life.

Are there any specific resources, programs, or strategies you found particularly helpful in dealing with addiction?

Some of the most helpful resources I’ve encountered include:

  • Books: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, Codependent No More by Melody Beattie, and A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle.
  • 12-Step Programs: Attending codependency programs was a huge eye-opener for understanding the addiction cycle from an emotional standpoint.
  • Spiritual Trauma Coaching: This was transformative for me. Healing trauma somatically and energetically helped me overcome deep-rooted pain.

I encourage seeking a supportive, compassionate community, exploring spiritual healing methods, and educating yourself on the nature of addiction and codependency.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey with addiction or your path to recovery?

Looking back, the most profound lesson I’ve learned is that our children are on their own divine missions. As mothers, we must learn to step back and allow them the space to walk their paths, however painful that may be. I’ve realized that my purpose wasn’t just to save my son from addiction but to heal myself and, in turn, become a living example of what recovery looks like.

It is in letting go and accepting that we truly find peace — for ourselves and for our children. We may not fully understand their journey, but we can be a powerful force of love, strength, and healing by reclaiming our own lives.
